My favorite is from 1879 about street sweeping:
“.. I though some time ago of appealing to you on this subject, but from laziness or the thought that it was not worth while to bother you with such a trifle, i have neglected to do so. This morning, however, I met a small army of brooms and was deluged wtih dust, on my return from breakfast, and the hour was fully nine o’clock. So I determined to acquaint you with my grievance without further delay. If there is any redress, I feel sure you will give it to us.”
